Pine forests don’t grow well in the ocean. That’s why we’re working to keep Portugal’s firmly rooted on dry land.

Since the start of our tree planting program in 2007, the Timberland team in Portugal has planted more than 100,000 trees!

The central focus of our tree planting in Portugal is the famous pine forest in Leiria, which has suffered the effects of desertification and deforestation in recent years, and is in danger of sliding into the Atlantic Ocean as the coastline falls away.  We have been replanting indigenous tree species in the forest, including the Maritime Pine and Castanea Sativa, as well as rare Lusitanian species like Prunus Lusitanica (Portuguese Laurel) among others.
