Centuries ago, Belgian tradition called for the planting of an oak tree when a baby boy was born; the oak represented bravery and strength. For baby girls, a linden tree was planted, to symbolize fertility and grace.
Timberland tree planters in Belgium are helping to preserve and perpetuate this years-old tradition. We’ve planted 4,500 trees in the Belgian city of Hasselt, along a path leading to the city’s “birth forest,” where residents still plant trees in honor of their newborn children. In addition to oak and linden trees, the Timberland path is lined with other varieties, including birch, ash, elderberry, buckthorn and hazel.
